Two Reasons to Exercise While You’re Pregnant…

According to a study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, researchers contacted 39 0f 52 women who were participants in a study 20 years ago that examined their exercise habits before, during, and after their pregnancies.  The follow-up found that moms who exercised through their pregnancy weighed less and were at a lower risk of cardiovascular disease than women who stopped exercising when they became pregnant.
Another reason to keep moving if you’re a mama to be!

Dogs are Battling the Bulge Too!

Dogs are overweight too

The research is in and it doesn’t look good for man’s best friend.  Recent studies show that up to 40% of the dogs in the US are overweight.  Just like their human counterparts, the excess weight can put them at risk for health problems.

The good news?  Studies also show that people who exercise with their dogs are more likely to stick with their fitness routine.  Exercises you can do with your dog include brisk walking, hiking, jogging, playing frisbee, and even doga (yep, yoga for your dog).

How to Spend Smart & Live Longer

There are a few things that money can’t buy.  Unfortunately, one of those things isn’t health.  Self magazine gives us 5 smart health investments:

Black Raspberries – At $5 per 1/2 pint these are pricey but worth every penny when you consider how they may protect against certain cancers and help stabilize your blood sugar.

Massage – A recent study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine shows that Swedish massage therapy lowers stress hormones and can increase your immunity.

Bike It – A 2010 study in Environmental Health Perspectives shows that riding a bicycle on a regular basis could add up to 14 months to your life expectancy.

Take a Vacation – The Marshfield Clinic found that women who took a vacation two or more times per year were less likely to be depressed and had happier marriages than those women who only took one vacation every 2 years.

Good Tennis Shoes – Support and protect your joints with a good tennis shoe.  You’re feet will thank you later.

Yoga for Runners!

Kimberly Fowler, founder of Yoga for Athletes and yoga guru for the LA Marathon, created a special video yoga series just for runners.  The series is designed to lengthen and stretch shortened hamstrings and open up tight hips.  In case you can’t watch the video, here are a few of the poses she recommends:

Forward Bend Pose (Hold for at least 30 seconds)

HOW TO:

  • Bring your legs together with feet touching; sit up tall take a deep breath.
  • On your exhale hinge forward from your hips and try to grab your toes. If you can’t reach your toes, use a rolled-up towel around the arches of your feet to reach forward.
  • Keep your back flat.

 

Seated Tree Pose (Hold for at least 30 seconds)

HOW TO:

  • Sit up straight like you did in forward bend and bring the bottom of your right foot to the inside of your left thigh. Let your right knee fall open towards the floor.
  • Take a deep breath in and on your exhale hinge forward from your waist and try to grab your left foot. If you can’t reach your foot than use your towel.
  • As your hip opens up, your knee will start to fall to the mat. Repeat on other side.

Cobblers Pose (Hold for at least 30 seconds)

HOW TO:

  • Bring the soles of feet together with knees wide apart. Sit up tall, take a deep breath in and on your exhale hinge forward from your waist. Try to bring your “nose towards your toes.” Don’t worry if your nose can’t touch your toes at this point.
  • If this is an easy pose for you, walk your hands out in front of you for a deeper stretch. If your knees are way up in the air, move your feet a little further from your body.

Reclining Pigeon Pose (Hold for at least 1 minute on each side)

HOW TO:

  • From Cobblers pose, bring your knees together then roll down onto your mat. Hug your knees into your chest and then bring your right foot on top of your left thigh. Your left foot is lifted off the ground.
  • Lace your hands around the front of your left shin and bring your left knee towards your chest. Try to hold this pose for at least 1 minute. Repeat on the other side.

Corpse Pose (Relax for 30 seconds)

HOW TO:

  • Lie flat on your back, arms out by your sides with palms up. Take one deep breath in through your nose and let it out through your mouth.
  • On your next exhale, let every muscle go. Just relax into your mat. Stay here a minute or two if you can.
  • From here, roll onto your side and come up to a seated position.

The US life expectancy has risen to an all-time high of 78 years!  Babies born in 2009 can expect to live to age 78.2.  Experts attribute the increase to better medical treatment, vaccination campaigns and public health measures against smoking.

There are a couple of reasons why I consider myself to be a Fitness Junke.  I thought I’d share, because I’m nice like that.

And the most important reason that I’m a Fitness Junke is……….

Yep, those are the two most important reasons.  I want to be around for a looooong time for them.

Seriously?  You really call this “wholesome” and “natural”.  What.Evah.

I’m cheap.  And I have a coupon for this.  In fact, I have 4 coupons for this because my Mom, who knows how cheap I am, was nice enough to send me the two that she received.  And now that I know I can NEVER eat this, I’m miffed.

Let me make it easy for all of you unsuspecting Mickey D’s oatmeal eaters out there.  That little bowl of “wholesome goodness” has 32 grams of sugar!  I’d be better off having a donut.  You can read more about this McDonald’s myth here on the Naked Food Cooking blog.

A new study suggests that the breast cancer drug Tamoxifen can protect against the disease for a decade after treatment ends and saves an estimated $47,580 in health care costs per 1000 women treated.  This is such good news!

Speaking of breast cancer, teams all across the country are gearing up the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.  Find you’re local event here.
