Two Reasons to Exercise While You’re Pregnant…

According to a study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, researchers contacted 39 0f 52 women who were participants in a study 20 years ago that examined their exercise habits before, during, and after their pregnancies.  The follow-up found that moms who exercised through their pregnancy weighed less and were at a lower risk of cardiovascular disease than women who stopped exercising when they became pregnant.
Another reason to keep moving if you’re a mama to be!

Pain is temporary.  Quitting is forever.

I LOVE this!  Fitbe, msn’s health site, just published “27 Reasons to Feel Instantly Inspired.” Click here to read the quotes and stories of 27 of the most iconic fitness motivation all-stars.

Pick your favorite and use it to motivate yourself to hit the gym and turn down those donuts in the break room.  My favorite is the title of this post:

“Pain is temporary.  Quitting lasts forever.”  Lance Armstrong

You can bet I’ll be using this as my mantra when I’m sweating it out on the treadmill and wanting to quit.

Get Your Jazz Hands Ready!!

IDEA,  the world’s largest association for fitness and wellness professionals, conducted its yearly survey to find out the top health and fitness trends of 2011.   This year, aerobics, water fitness and martial arts-based classes had the largest decline in popularity and dance and boot camp classes showed the largest growth.

I was surprised to find out that Jazzercise, founded in 1969, is still popular around the globe and was just named most successful fitness franchise by Entrepreneur Magazine.  The founder, Julie Shepherd Missett, continues to choreograph 30 new songs every 10 weeks to keep her classes fresh and keep members motivated.  Pretty impressive when you consider how easily fitness fads come and go.  Remember those  Reebok Step Aerobics videos?

Walking for fitness

Walking off the pounds that is.  Walking is one of the easiest and also the cheapest form of exercise there is.  Fitness experts say that working your way up to 10,000 steps per day could help you lose 20 pounds this year.

What are you waiting for?  Grab a pedometer and start walking!

Dogs are Battling the Bulge Too!

Dogs are overweight too

The research is in and it doesn’t look good for man’s best friend.  Recent studies show that up to 40% of the dogs in the US are overweight.  Just like their human counterparts, the excess weight can put them at risk for health problems.

The good news?  Studies also show that people who exercise with their dogs are more likely to stick with their fitness routine.  Exercises you can do with your dog include brisk walking, hiking, jogging, playing frisbee, and even doga (yep, yoga for your dog).

Is Your Personal Trainer Certified? You may be surprised…

Dangerous Personal Trainer

Women’s Health sheds light on an alarming practice in health clubs and gyms across the nation.  Before you invest in sessions with a personal trainer or take your gym up on the offer of a free session with a trainer – know that not all personal trainers are certified and not all health clubs and gyms ensure the trainers working for them are certified.

Unfortunately, Shalla Miguez found this out the hard way.  During a free session with a personal trainer in the gym she had just joined, Miquez warned the trainer that he was pushing her too hard but she was ignored.  Five days later she was in the hospital diagnosed with exertional rhabdomyolysis, a potentially fatal condition caused when muscle fibers break down into the bloodstream so severely that they clog the kidneys, making them unable to process urine properly. You have to do your own research!  Experts recommend personal trainers who have been certified by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), two of the nation’s most reputable fitness organizations.

Pole Dancing for Jesus

Yep, you read it right.  In a suburb of Houston, TX christian ladies are stirring up controversy with their pole dancing classes.  The organizer of the class says, “God gives us these bodies and they are suppose to be our temples and we are suppose to take care of them and that’s what we are doing.”

That’s certainly one way of looking at it. Could this be the new fitness craze to sweep the nation?  What do you think?

A Cup of Morning “Thinspiration”

At her heaviest Pam weighed 264 pounds.  She made a decision to lose the weight after a child asked her when her baby was due and she wasn’t pregnant.  This was the turning point when she knew her lifestyle had to change.

Pam started exercising 3-4 days per week and avoided junk and processed foods.  She now eats up to 6 small meals a day to speed up her metabolism.  She incorporates lean proteins such as fish, chicken, nuts, tofu, mushrooms and eggs into her daily meals and pairs it with complex carbs.

Pam lost her weight the good ol’ fashioned way and has kept it off for 6 years!

The US life expectancy has risen to an all-time high of 78 years!  Babies born in 2009 can expect to live to age 78.2.  Experts attribute the increase to better medical treatment, vaccination campaigns and public health measures against smoking.

Follow these 3 simple tips when working out to blast more fat!

  • Shorter but more frequent and intense workouts can burn more fat
  • Incorporate strength or resistance training into your workout.  Muscles burn fat!
  • Drink lots of water!  Your body needs to be properly hydrated when working out.
