Did You Over Indulge Yesterday?

25 Apr

Yeah, me too.  I even found myself looking though the kids’ Easter baskets for a piece of chocolate.  I didn’t weigh myself this morning because I didn’t want to add insult to injury.  Oh well, its not the end of the world.  The best thing to do is to dust ourselves off and get back on the health and fitness bandwagon and go on with our day.

I plan on drinking lots of water and eating lots of fresh fruits and probably a nice big salad for supper.  And throwing out the rest of the Easter candy when the kids aren’t looking.  What’s your plan?

Life Size Barbie Fights Eating Disorders…

22 Apr

Galia Slayen’s built a life-sized Barbie doll for the first National Eating Disorders Awareness month.  The Barbie doll stands about 6 feet tall with a 39″ bust, 18″ waist, and 33″ hips. Freaky, huh?

Galia battled aneroxia in high school and wanted to build the life-size representation of Barbie to show the world what an eating disorder looks like and how young girls can develop a negative self-image from being bombarded with “perfect” dolls, models, and other images from the media.

I think this is amazing.  So many young girls (and even older women) battle eating disorders in order to look like what society says is beautiful.  As a mom I want to teach my children to be healthy and active, not skinny.  What do you think?

Spicy Hummus Dip…

20 Apr

Hummus is a healthy alternative to dips, mayo, and other sandwich spreads.  Try it as a dip with raw veggies or pita chips, and on sandwiches and wraps. It’s also very filling and chock full of protein.

Here’s a recipe for Spicy Hummus Dip posted by TWICEAGAIN at sparkpeople.com that I can’t wait to try:

1 19 oz can Chickpeas, drained & rinsed
      Juice of 1 lemon
Pulp of 1 whole Garlic bulb, roasted
        1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
      1 tsp ground Cumin
      1 tsp Paprika
      1/2 tsp Curry powder
      4 tbsp chopped fresh Cilantro
      1/3 cup Tahini
      2 tbsp Olive Oil

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Keeping skin on garlic bulb, carefully cut the top of the bulb in order to expose all of the individual cloves.

Place on tin foil and drizzel with 1/4 tsp of the Olive Oil. Wrap bulb up like a Hershey’s Kiss and roast in oven for 30 min.

Meanwhile, drain and rinse Chickpeas well. Place in food processor along with remaining ingredients. Once garlic has finished roasting, squeeze pulp in with other ingredients and whiz until well blended.

Feel free to add or reduce the amount of garlic and omit the cayenne pepper in order to personalize this recipe if you’d like

Serving size is 1/4 cup.
Goes great with whole wheat flat bread and raw veggies!

Makes 10 servings.

Consumer: 1; Evil Corporation Preying on Obese People: 0

20 Apr

Apparently there are fraudulent websites that make false weight loss claims, use fake customer testimonials, use fake endorsements, inappropriately use the logos of major media outlets such as ABC, CNN, Fox News, and Consumer Reports,  all in a scam to prompt people to buy their amazing-lose-25-pounds-in-a-week acai berry weight loss products.

Wait just a minute while I put my surprised face on.

The good news is that the Federal Trade Commission has asked federal courts to freeze the assets of said evil corporations and is also asking for customer refunds.

Score 1 for the good guys!

Even Jillian Hates it…

19 Apr

In the latest issue of Shape Magazine,  Jillian Michaels, tough as nails fitness trainer from the Biggest Loser,  admitted that she hated to exercise.  Jillian goes on to further explain that she exercises because of how great she feels when she’s done and because she knows it essential for living a healthy lifestyle.

I don’t know about you but knowing this makes me feel a lot better about my attitude (or lack of it) towards exercising.  It’s also refreshing for someone who is considered an expert in the health and fitness field to be so candid about her feelings.

What do you think?  Do you hate to exercise?

Two Reasons to Exercise While You’re Pregnant…

19 Apr

According to a study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, researchers contacted 39 0f 52 women who were participants in a study 20 years ago that examined their exercise habits before, during, and after their pregnancies.  The follow-up found that moms who exercised through their pregnancy weighed less and were at a lower risk of cardiovascular disease than women who stopped exercising when they became pregnant.

How Eating Healthy Can Make You Fat…

18 Apr

Exhibit A:

Doesn’t this look healthy?  The label says 99% fat free and its has blueberries and acai which are loaded with anti-oxidants.

Not all yogurt is created equal my friends. This healthy looking container of yogurt has 170 calories, 33 grams of carbs, and 26 GRAMS OF SUGAR!  To give you a point of reference, a Snickers candy bar has 270 calories, 34.5 grams of carbs, and 28.8 grams of sugar.  Not a whole lot of difference huh?

It is imperative that you read the labels on the foods you eat.  Trusting the packaging or eating what you’ve always been told is healthy is not enough.

In honor of the Boston Marathon today Fitbe lets us in on the secret (and maybe a little weird) pre-race rituals of some of the best runners.  Here are a few of the highlights:

Bill Rodgers, four time winner of both the Boston & New York City marathon, wore a snoopy hat.

Ryan Hall, US 1/2 marathon and 12k record holder, shaves his face, head, and legs before a race.

Molly Huddle, US 5k record holder, eats a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on the morning of the race and does butt kicks and high knees.

Do you have a pre-race/game ritual?  Care to share? I’d love to know!
